In the old days, maternity pots were used by neighboring women to carry food to woman and her family during a confinement.
Marianne Herlufsdatter, born in Wisconsin USA 1931. Studio in Birkerød from 1952 together with husband Lars Thirslund. From 1970, studio in Sweden.

This large lidded jar is unglazed on the outside, glazed with a yin yang sign on the inside. Relief of a man and a woman and on top of the lid a newborn child.
